Perhaps Kontact's configuration files have been damaged. You should have a
directory named ".local/share/kontact" in your home directory. Try shutting
down Kontact and KMail, moving ".local/share/kontact" somewhere safe, and
starting Kontact.
Of course, if that fails miserably, move the directory back :-(
If it works, you can experiment with getting your old customisations back by
copying files from the saved directory to the new ".local/share/kontact"
directory.
