If I forward an email (e.g. to myself), by default it becomes encapsulated. If I then open an email (A) that has another one (B) encapsulated, then click reply, the reply applies to A, not B. However, if I open email A which has B encapsulated, click on "Encapsulated message" to make another window pop-up, and then click reply, the reply applies to B. a.k.a.
