It worked perfectly, using the Breeze theme icon, on the Testing Edition. The very same GParted package on the User Edition and Unstable Edition failed to display the icons. To me this suggests it's not the app. I tried regenerating the icon cache but that didn't help. In the end a workaround was to install gnome-icon-theme, but then GParted uses the GNOME default theme icons, not the Breeze theme ones. At this point it's beyond my knowledge on how to troubleshoot further and resolve this.
