I find this to be a bit odd too, and I suspect it's why the bookmarks button is hidden in the file dialogs by default, and why the Bookmarks feature added to Dolphin a year or so ago is quite hidden in a sub-menu of the Go menu (which isn't visible by default). So we have a sort of "Simple by default (places)" and "Powerful when needed (bookmarks)" split. Without simply ripping Bookmarks out, I'm not sure there's anything actionable here. And if we do that, we'll surely upset the small subset of people who do use the feature.
