I have no idea why this sort of reinstallation fixed it. FYI I do have it installed as a snap and libpulse0 is installed. I just invoked it from the command line to troubleshoot why the new version would not start anymore, which spawned the error I mention. I also rebooted the machine to test and used a previous kernel as well, all with no effect. I did not update the system itself.
