I think they know of this bug and can reproduce it easily they just don't want to acknowledge it. I managed to get a co-worker to reproduce it on his own machine with no knowledge of his setup, I simply told him to not power-off his machine for several days and the memory leak was very apparent: plasmashell memory consumption ballooned. In short, it's a widespread memory leak but either very few people use KDE or very few use KDE and leave the PC powered on for more than a single day.
