Without this feature, navigating such a long package list becomes quite clumsy. Here is a GIF showing how this works in Synaptic. You can see the text as I am typing it in a little box that appears to the bottom-right of the package list. I have also "obsoleted" the attachment shared in comment #1, which is a script file that has nothing to do with this bug.
