I'm reopening this bug after a small discussion with the community at reddit -

Here's a reason copied from reddit:
    "The applet in settings feels incomplete without a connect disconnect
option. For example, if I wanted to add a vpn connection, I had to add the vpn
connection in the settings, then come to the system tray and then test whether
my settings work.
    Its true that for some users (including the old me :P) , the idea that they
would find the vpn connections in the system tray itself may be foreign and
hence feel lost after adding a connection. May be adding vpn connection is not
something a fresh user would do but still a visible button in the settings will
feel a lot more friendlier. Or at least, that's my take on this!"

My suggestion is to add a connect/disconnect button similar to the one in
system tray next to the connection name.
