I also strongly dislike the new behavior. Apart from annoying me like I didn't
know was even possible, it makes some things a lot more difficult. The first
thing that comes to mind is trying to move something (drag-n-drop) into the
root of a directory with only subfolders in view, which is damn-near (or maybe
even literally?) impossible. Getting the desired right-click context menu as
mentioned above as well.

Also, I tend to want to actually _deselect_ things, which is admittedly
non-functional, but very much harder to pull of now.

The old behavior was considered unpopular (apparently) based on the existence
of a feature request. Well, this behavior is also unpopular as evidenced by
this bug report (as well as comments on Bug 453528 and Bug 453528). Who's to
say which is more unpopular, have things improved or worsened? A revert would
cause Bug 181437 to be reopened (though I personally wouldn't mind). This so
obviously just needs an option in the settings.
