Well, looks like the issue persists. The updates apparently upgraded my kernel.
With secure boot enabled, I have to sign nvidia kernel modules every time the
kernel is updated. So Wayland worked because nvidia kernel modules were not
loaded. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
