The only workaround I found is to manually edit the font settings in kmailrc: UnreadMessageFont=Monospace,10,-1,5,75,0,0,0,0,0 <- this is bold UnreadMessageFont=Monospace,10,-1,5,50,0,0,0,0,0 <- this is not the value 75 defines the bold font.
