Despite not being able to reproduce the problem with "user edition", I tried the experiment (disconnecting one monitor via an HDMI switch; see comment 81) using "unstable edition". I discovered a crash in plasmashell if the monitor is Primary (bug 464334). But the monitor WAS re-enabled when reconnected.
