A lot of KDE programs are not designed to be run as root, such as Dolphin or
Kate. I get it, you ran it as a normal user as Kali but that's probably not how
Kali was designed to be used either.

That's not true, firmware updating in Discover is using fwupd which does not
elevate to full root access - it uses polkit to authenticate the user.

I'm not sure why you reopened this issue, the crash log attached is unusuable
to us (there's nothing specific to Discover at all in the logs) and more than
likely caused by a lower layer like a broken crypto library shipped by Kali.

If you can provide a better backtrace, which is replicatable on something like
a Debian system - which you say Kali is based on - but until then I marked it
as NEEDSINFO.
