I hope not they add each subfolder as a collection."<< I hope I can explain --- when images are in the process of having all metadata added and then being converted and edited, I let digiKam "see" that entire working folder. Then, when I have the finished jpegs, I "hide" everything except for the finished images; thus, when I do a keyword tag search, I am not inundated with fifteen versions of the same image; if I can find the finished image, I immediately know where all it's other versions are without having them clutter up my Tags View.
