That allows us to have quite solid integration with all features. Abstraction layers tend to result in a weaker experience for everyone. NetworkManager is initself an abstraction layer around other tech (you can use iwd there) Plasma is designed so that applets are interchangeable; the best bet would be someone writing a new applet for this case.
