Since I am running Ubuntu mantic, I should not need to install debug symbols anymore since GDB is supposed to automatically install them for me https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debug%20Symbol%20Packages . Indeed I was prompted when first running and it did download them with debuginfod. I guess the heuristic didn't catch this as required.
