Ah, I had missed that magic in the direct use of the ioctl. I had noticed the
moral equivalent in the use of drmModeSetCursor in applyPendingChangesLegacy.

(The log output, BTW, is real  - that's triggered by the kernel vmwgfx driver
lying about a GEM driver and managing PRIME <-> handle through TTM. Which means
that any attempt to drmCloseBufferHandle that will fail and clobber errno. And
I am unable to see any way around that.)
