* I restarted my Kubuntu workstation again
* This time I did a `shutdown`

There must have been something wrong with the runtime instance, as I had
previously rebooted (not a shutdown) prior to seeing this problem.
The reason I rebooted was some trouble with Firefox windows. My recommendation
now is if you have issues that look like they are related to the graphics
stuff, etc. Perform a shutdown, not just reboot to let the GPU flush or
whatever has to happen. Sorry for the bother, hopefully someone will learn
from this experience :-)
