After I removed the "%u" in the file ~/.config/autostart/thunderbird.desktop
from line "Exec=thunderbird %u" I can now again autostart TB during login.
(worked fine in lxqt, so it is a KDE 5 issue)
The %u seems to make trouble in the desktop file at all.
For Firefox eg. it forces it to open the page "www.%u.com" after startup.
Unfortunately there's no .xsession-errors file any longer which contained (in
the past) useful information :-(
