  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY

The "Animations" option on this page has radio buttons for three settings
"OpenGL", "Software" and "None". However, it is not clear what these options
do or what they should be set to for the best results.

I am guessing that "None" disables animations completely, and the other two
options enable them. But it is not clear what animations are affected - do
they mean animated GIFs? It is necessary to read the handbook to discover that
this setting affects fading between images.

A better approach may be to have the on/off setting (as a check box) on the
"Image View" page, with a hint text:

[X] Fade between images when switching
If this is checked, switching between images in "View" mode will fade
between them.
If this is off, then the images will change immediately.

and the actual internal implementation as a second check box on the "Advanced"
page:

[X] Use OpenGL for transition effects
Hardware acceleration will be used for fading between images, this
should
normally be set this to on unless there are problems. If set to off
software animation
will be used, which may help if OpenGL does not work properly.
