I don't much like app-provided tray icons either, so I'm quite sympathetic to
what you're trying to accomplish, but unfortunately, as requested, this idea
would break the UX completely for apps that have a legitimate reason to show a
system tray icon--such as the "currently recording" indicator shown by
Spectacle the the KDE desktop portal. If those got hidden by default, not only
would you not know how to end recording, but a malicious app could abuse this
to secretly recording the background with no user-visible indication of the
fact.
