SUMMARY
The menubar functionality in KDE Plasma has been really problematic.
Many applications that will show menu bars in other desktop environments do not
show them in KDE. E.g., Thunar, Firefox, Dolphin, JetBrains IDEs, etc.
Even when the Global Menu widget is added (which is not my preference),
applications will often still not have their global menu File/Edit/View/etc.
menus available, outside of pressing Alt+some key (i.e., the functionality
where pressing alt usually adds an underline to what letter to type to select a
menu entry, in most operating systems/window managers).
Not being able to access these most essential menus in the normal fashion, that
has been common among operating systems for many decades (with notable
exceptions, like apple) is a major UX issue imo.
>From reading bug reports, it sounds like this functionality is supposed to
mediated by whether there is a global menu widget present. However, even if
this worked correctly, I think such a core part of how people interact with
applications is worthy of a specific option in KDE settings, which allows
toggling it on and off.
There are cases where I might want to have the global menu available as both a
widget, and available in the window itself.
Even better, a settings panel where the user could individually specify whether
they want an in-window menu bar for particular applications would be fantastic.
It seems like, as time passes, applications' logic for whether to display a
MenuBar or not has been growing more and more inconsistent and complex, which
in turn could necessitate such a settings panel. Some applications assume that
the window manager will be displaying a global menu, whereas others always
display a global menu in-app, and all of the different configurations in
between.
Anyway. This has been frustrating me for a long time across multiple different
desktop environments.. And it would be cool if KDE got it right :)
(Also, beyond the "improvement" suggestions, there is the core bug where the
menubar/global menu just doesn't show in a lot of applications right now, and
the widget doesn't offer global menus all of the time, even when the
application has them, and can display them via Alt-shortcut.)
This issue is present in many applications, and shouldn't be too hard to find
at least one case where it isn't working correctly.
Here are two of the main bug cases:
Case 1: user does not have a global menu widget configured, and an application
that has a global menu/menubar does not display a menubar anywhere.
Case 2: user does have a global menu widget configured, and an application has
a global menu/menubar, and the global menu hamburger menu is visible in the
task bar, however when clicked, it does not show menus. (E.g., Thunar,
Firefox)
(Firefox shows a menubar when alt is pressed. Thunar Shows a hamburger menu
in-app when Ctrl+M is pressed, but it disappears when clicked on.)
