It's a Rails app. Those tend to use more resources. But deploying

Yes, Ruby made *huge* speed improvements in 2.0, and again in
2.1. I recently updated some of our company's internal Rails-based
tools from 1.9.3 to 2.1.0, and the speed improvements are really
quite gratifying :)
Yep. Our test instance is running on 2.1; other interpreters are not
necessarily out of the question, although I don't know which ones
have/have not been tested/confirmed working with GitLab. But in our
(small) trials at this point it's been flying.
