I think I've stated my question in a way that makes clear that I did not know the answer. I did not know if the renaming of branches would make the existing shasums invalid. Hence my formulation. Git might be known by you inside out, but please note that is not the case for everyone. I personally think it's inappropriate to make fun of someone less knowledgeable.
