If you're willing to support translations only in the event that kdelibs is available then you can use i18n all the time, and use a macro to define it as a no-effect wrapper when kdelibs isn't available. With other (non-KDE) translations systems it might also be possible to flag i18n() as the "translatable string" marker with a bit of extra work to make i18n() integrate with the alternative translation system.
