Apologies for replying to my own mail, but I forgot to mention the appdata-tools repo[1] which has the appdata-validate command. It's packaged in Fedora in the appdata-tools package. You can use appdata-validate to check the format and style of the XML files to make sure they get used by the software centers and the metadata extractors.
