unfortunately, there is no 'easy' way as audio, particularly on Linux, is a 
bit of a complicated mess. kmix provides implementations for getting and 
interacting with controls for various available system. it is in 
kdemultimedia/kmix/, and particularly the backends/ directory is interesting.

there has been work on creating a Plasma::DataEngine for kmix as well as a 
plasmoid. you can see the effort here:
