"As you like it" - having your KDE related sources in one place is a good idea,
but no requirement.
I use
KDE/ <- contains kdelibs, workspace etc. sources
KDE/BUILD <- contains the resp. build directories
but you can also use
~/foo/kdelibs
~/bar/kdelibs/workspacebuild
~/bar/kde-workspace
~/foo/kde-workspace/libsbuild
Kinda insane, but possible.
There's also http://kdesrc-build.kde.org/
