I would like that... as an option and KDE is aiming to be configurable :)
Neither is "like" a reason nor is configurability of the configuration behavior (in order to get the change you desire in at least some way) nearly sane. Instant application of setting changes can only happen if those changes don't imply much cost. Assume the system color dialog - everytime you change a color (ideally every time you drag the slider?) the setting would be applied to each and every application - what is not cheap and (through the IPC and app reloading) takes some time. Or what about "accidental" selection of plasma themes (ie. when navigating the list with the arrow keys)? So you get a blocking config GUI and many unwanted updates or add some "delayed application" smartness. Worse: taking the kwin compositing dialog, changing the compositor between xrender and opengl may imply other settings you want or want not to adjust (scaling algorithm, the graphicssystem) what may imply restarting the compositor or even KWin several times. Good idea to you? Such can only be done by per setting justification ("cheap reaction") and then you're lost in varying behavior - searching whether there's an "apply" button for settings where you cannot immediately see the impact. Yes, "But Gnome can do that". It's either because Gnome is much better than KDE or you cannot configure anything there in the first place. I btw. just tested TheGimp - changing the theme blocks the GUI w/o even selecting the new theme first. Doesn't feel too good to me. Cheers, Thomas
