How about we do it like this: 1) We fetch max 10 file matches. 2) We fetch max 10 mail matches. 3) We combine them based on how much we got, i.e.: If we have 10 for both we show 5/5; when we have 4/10 we show 4/6, when we have 8/4 we show 8/2, when we have 2/2 we show 2/2. You'd have to be the judge whether the extra search work would offset the UX benefits.
