That's a packaging problem - at least for single user systems. Baloo has been split in different packages in openSUSE (not because they're better than others, but because I'm involved in the team and so I followed the progress) and thus you can remove file indexing while keeping PIM, and so on. Of course, it means you'll get degraded functionality.
