tried to use the raster renderer, but it did not help, however what DID HELP was to change the theme!!! apparently the ...share/apps/desktoptheme/default misses the lancelot subdirectory and some other files
so the solution is to switch to Blend, Elegance, Heron or Silicon. Still broken is Oxygen and Slime-Glow Still other issues persist, but with the above themes, the kmenu (but not the menu button) and mouse-over bubbles are shown -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
