Lockling the Plasma widgets so that they no longer fade in their handles -- that's the killer on slower ATI hardware -- helps tremendously. Select it from the cashew (upper right). I too have not sat down to debug what causes this exactly - it's easier just to switch to another machine with a better- supported graphics card. [ade]
