So this is just going to become a victim of the better-is-the-enemy-of-good principle? I'm not saying there can be better ways to do this but AFAIC this is already pretty good, certainly good enough and even too good in practice to keep me from more interesting things to come back and look at other implementations. So I'm really inclined either to push this in a couple of days in accordance with Nate's green light, or else abandon things and keep using my own solution until someone else pushes a fix (that suits me just as well).
