That seems to be the case. I've contacted GNOME@ to see if media detection is 
a known problem in 5.5 (I run 5.5-Release, not even 5-STABLE).

Great! I am going to put KDE 3.5.5 and KOffice 1.6.1 into ports real soon now, 
your patch will be included! For the moment, I've left HAL support as a 
compile-time option (default to off) for FreeBSD 5 and higher, but I might 
change this default-to-on for FreeBSD versions which are known to work, if 
GNOME@ can supply me with some OSVERSION values.
