I recently portupgraded kdebase3 which produced the problem. By now i have de- and reinstalled the whole kde stuff, including kdelibs; Problem still persists. Since i have been unable to find some kind of startup log for kde and are not very familiar with the kde boot process / architecture at all i am a little lost as to what i could do to get back a working kde.
Starting kde from kdm yields a less then detailed errormsg:, something like 'could not start kdeinit - check your installation'. I also tried: %start_kdeinit /usr/local/bin/start_kdeinit: Exec format error.
