The current port (akonadi-1.6.0) seems to support sqlite just fine. I think requiring a full-blown mysql server for each desktop user is a bit too much for the stuff that akonadi does (mostly caching, if I understand correctly), so I was very happy that I could enable the sqlite backend in the port.
