I had used the Kde graphical mixer to check the volume yesterday, and no matter what I set the apparant volume to, the system remained silent...
But today when I've used "mixer" from the console it reported that the volume was set to nil. And the instant I set the volume via the console mixer utility, there was sound again . . . . . . . joy, sort of. I don't like the source problem remaining a mystery, in my books that's a very Linux/Windows type of behaviour I don't like. Going back to the graphical mixer application and it now seems to be setting the sound; so the result is that I can't reproduce the problem to verify/check whether it was a system or a human error. For the time-being I would suggest for anybody with inexplicable silence, to also check the vol setting from the console "mix" utility..
