Hi, I don't have amarok installed, but Dragon Player plays mp3s for me just fine. I have Phonon using the gstreamer backend on kde-4.8.4 with up-to-date ports. (FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE i386).
Have you tried forcing a re-install of all the gstreamer stuff?
