even just using the stand alone demo, i do agree that using it it is really self explanatory and feels pretty natural, however: the first impact is not particularly good, it's really mysterious until you start using it, due to the lack of clues of what things do. i've seen too many users getting completely paralyzed like bunnies in front of headlights, completely afraid to do any interaction until they are sure they won't "break something"(tm) by doing so (i know this type of user is hopeless but is the most common behavior that inexperienced users to some degree have). i don't pretend something that would be immediately obvious to anyone without interaction, that is plain not possible, but i do think with very few changes there could be some help. so the challenge is to do something that conveys more information in a single screen, -but- at the same time doesn't add too much visual clutter. I'll try to randomly hack around the stand alone example and see if my ideas kinda work or not.
