I'll note that kdesrc-build already does this for Subversion initial 
checkouts. (At least I think it still does, I haven't done an svn co in awhile 
:P)

I contributed a README for the svn nightly tarballs and even an unpacking 
script included with it IIRC, so we could do something similar for git 
modules.
