We aim at KDE Workspace integration and will soon introduce Nepomuk as a hard dependency, which will make using KDE Telepathy in other DMs rather impossible. But that's not really a problem since the accounts are shared between desktops, so in Gnome, you can use their Telepathy integration (Empathy) with the accounts set in KDE (and vice-versa). In the future you'll have even chat history shared between Gnome/KDE Telepathy.
