Thanks, that seems to have improved things.  The qt compile finished ok (about 
3 or 4 hours), but the digiKam compile failed again after 4 or 5 hours:

If I ever get right through this, I'll put together a list of precise 
instructions, although the exact failures probably depend on the state of the 
stuff in the repositories at the time.  For the record, my c:\kdroot dir is now 
up to 5.3GB, after gaining a couple of GB during today's run - 172,000 files, 
none called digikam.exe.

I have copied the contents of
%KDEROOT%\build\libs\qt-4.6.0.20100109\work\mingw4-RelWithDebInfo-4.6\mkspecs\*
to
%KDEROOT%\mkspecs\*
