[kde] kmix: how do I control the hardware volume?

When PulseAudio is used, kmix only shows the PA volume controls. In 
order to get to my soundcard's controls, I have to open a terminal and use:

  alsamixer -c0
I'd like to use KMix for this. Is this possible?
