Of course, under the conditions where BT would even be an option both devices must be able to connect to the same wifi access point almost by definition. In that case they'll get IP addresses on the same local network and thus make "direct connections". KDE Connect gives rather fine-grained control over what features are allowed and thus over what kind of potentially sensitive information might transit over indirect connections on public networks (and I can't imagine that the devs have NOT implemented safe transfer protocols, but I haven't checked that).
