Maybe MLT, as used by kdenlive, is not detecting the widescreen. That is the most plausible cause. You can check this yourself by running 'inigo' against the video file. Don't worry if it does not fill the window or size the window to the video resolution--that's not important here. What is important is whether it keeps the aspect ratio. If inigo does not play it properly, then we have to figure which codec your version of MLT is using. Well, you can do the following and report your results: $ inigo avformat:video-file $ inigo libdv:video-file libdv was the default in older MLT versions and avformat is the default since mlt v0.2.4.
