I see a possible legal problem:
GEGL is LGPL v3, while Kdenlive currently is GPL v2. The GPL requires all 
linked libraries to be "GPL compatile" (there's an exception for libs that 
ship as part of the OS, though). The clarification of wording however in the 
newer (L)GPL strictly speaking counts as "additional limitation" that's 
forbidden by GPL v2. Luckily Kdenlive's license contains the "or any later GPL 
version" clause which at least for Kdenlive should make it manageable.
However, what about other apps that use MLT? Are they all (L)GPL v3 
compatible?
