I did it last night, should be available in cvs now. It will not entirely fix your problem, but at least, instead of crashing kdenlive, you should see a message box saying the video clip is not compatible with kdenlive. Maybe you should check your mlt install. It did configure it with the "--enable-gpl" flag, because otherwise it doesn't install some of the libs....
