I just noticed that the instructions from this page http://www.kdenlive.org/user-manual/downloading-and-installing-kdenlive/installing-source/installing-ffmpeg
seem to be hinting at the wrong git repository. The one I found and used comes from this page (the Ubuntu install guide for x264, linked off that original kdenlive page) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 and they suggest: git clone git://git.videolan.org/ffmpeg I can't edit the web page, so someone with edit rights should do it.
