You know, mpeg4 is a really bad format for video editing. I get mpeg2 .m2t files from my HDV camera, work with 12gb files no problem.
For high quality video editing i would recommend the DNxHD codec. You can convert your clips easily in the project manager too! (right click on clip, transcode...) Great feature:) They get autoadded to the project then you can just start editing.
